David Frazer

David Frazer earned his BFA in Painting from RISD, his K–12 Teaching Certification in Art from Bridgewater State College and his MFA in Painting from the University of New Mexico. Before joining RISD’s faculty in 1978, he was a visiting artist and lecturer at many colleges and universities around the world, including Chung-Ang University and Chungnam National University in South Korea; Brookhaven College in Dallas, Texas; Temple University in Rome; Brown University; Skidmore College; Adelphi University and Parsons School of Design in New York. Frazer has served as graduate painting coordinator, head of painting and printmaking and chief critic and director of the RISD European Honors Program in Rome. Frazer’s honors include numerous grants and sponsored research at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou, China.

Frazer’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries across the country, including the Chazan Gallery at Wheeler, the Virginia Lynch Gallery, and the Full Circle Gallery in Rhode Island; the Bromfield Gallery in Boston; the Fisher Press in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Forum Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Collage and Abstract Expressionist painting inform his aesthetic and his structural
 process, but although his
paintings allude to printing or transfer techniques, they do not use
them. His work is primarily abstract and improvisational and plays with such symbolic images as apples, eggs and tulips.
