Ian Russell
Ian Alden Russell is a contemporary art curator who currently serves as curator of Brown University’s David Winton Bell Gallery and project development consultant for Tania Bruguera’s commission for the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern. Before joining RISD’s Glass department, he was assistant professor of Curating and Contemporary Art at Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey and a guest lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His curatorial practice and critical writings address historical materialism, the politics of images, institutional discrimination, political ecology, new media and socially engaged practice.
Russell has been a visiting critic at Bryn Mawr College, School of Visual Arts New York and University of Texas, Austin and has been invited to give lectures at institutions around the globe, including the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Fudan University in Shanghai, Harvard University and University of Cambridge. His writings have been published by Cambridge University Press, Cittadellarte, deCordova Museum & Sculpture Park, Lars Muller Publishers, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Oxford University Press, Springer-Kluwer and Yapı Kredi Publishers.
He recently curated such exhibitions as On Protest, Art and Activism featuring Badlands Unlimited with Paul Chan, Melvin Edwards’ Festivals, Funerals and New Life featuring works with Jayne Cortez, Mark Dion’s Against the Current at Ormston House in Limerick, Fatma Bucak’s And men turned their faces from there and the premier of Vincent Valdez’s The Strangest Fruit. He contributed to the Safina Radio Project at the 56th Venice Biennale, the Hong Kong Umbrella Festival and An Innocent City in Istanbul, Turkey.
