Johanna Barthmaier is a landscape architect whose work examines the relationships between large-scale urban infrastructure, public realm programming and community outreach. She received a bachelor’s in Fine Art in Environmental Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art. After working in the field of architecture, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she won the Laurie D Olin prize and the ASLA award of excellence in the general design category. After graduating, she worked at OLIN and James Corner Field Operations as associate of the Seattle Central Waterfront, Elliott Bay Seawall and Presidio Tunnel Tops Project in San Francisco.

Barthmaier’s projects combine art, design and science to achieve a balance of beauty and efficiency within the systems that encompass them. Working with other disciplines has been increasingly important to both her professional and personal design work. She finds that an interdisciplinary approach is necessary to meet the complex needs of urban and social spaces.
