Judith Maloney has taught at Rutgers, Rhode Island College and, since 1990, design at RISD. She has also been senior lecturer in RISD’s History of Art + Visual Culture department, teaching Making It Real: A History of Simulation Experiences, which examines American art and entertainment that transport viewers to another reality.

Maloney has been studying the marine horizon since childhood. Multiple trans-Atlantic voyages aboard the research vessel Oceanus, a 175-foot ship operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, have provided Maloney uninterrupted 360-degree views of the ocean horizon. She has been a participant in various artist residency programs along the sea’s edge, including the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland, the Cill Rialaig Project in Ireland and the Upernavik Retreat in Greenland. She has had solo exhibitions at Don Soker Contemporary Art in San Francisco and Gallery Katz in Boston. Her work is in museums and private collections throughout North America and Europe.
