Karen Schiff is an artist and wordsmith who often combines visual and verbal work. This hybridity is reflected in her interdisciplinary teaching, where she uses writing and research to further and support studio progress. She earned an MFA (Honors in Drawing) after working as an assistant professor in her PhD field (Comparative Literature & Literary Theory, with a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies). Her dissertation analyzed creatively visual novels as precedents for artists’ books. As an undergraduate at Brown University, she studied Graphic Design at RISD, almost 20 years before the dual degree program began.

Schiff’s drawings, paintings, installations and performances play with sensory dimensions of language and haptic experiences of space. They have been exhibited at galleries and museums in New York, around the US and in other countries, and her works are held in public, private and corporate collections. Recent writings have appeared in Art in America, Hyperallergic Weekend, and on the blog she created with another artist from a Yaddo studio residency, Wallscrawler. Her publications tend to focus on issues about art and language, artist Agnes Martin and complexities of identity in art.
