Vivian Charlesworth

Vivian Charlesworth holds an MFA in Digital + Media from RISD and a BA in Fine Art and Comparative Literature from Sarah Lawrence College. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally and has been awarded residencies at Serlachius Museum (Finland), Vermont Studio Center and Elsewhere Museum among others.

Charlesworth makes objects and immersive environments that create a space for physical interplay between the viewer and the artwork. Each piece fosters a sensation of stepping into the middle of a story. Using media in the form of video, audio, electronics and projection, Charlesworth’s practice revolves around the act of observation. In order to make the viewer aware of their own gaze, she immerses them within fragmented narratives that ask to be reassembled. Her elaborate visuals draw heavily from theater and early cinema.
