Giżycki Honored in Zagreb
HAVC department senior critic Marcin Giżycki (above) has enjoyed a spate of recent accolades for his art and scholarship in animation.

Polish filmmaker Marcin Giżycki, a senior critic in RISD’s History of Art and Visual Culture department, traveled to Zagreb, Croatia in late May to accept the Animafest Zagreb Award for Outstanding Contributions to Animation Studies. The unique honor is part of Animafest’s Symposium for Contemporary Animation, which aims to “stimulate exchange between filmmakers and scholars.”
Giżycki began making films in 1980 and delivered the keynote address in Zagreb reflecting on his personal journey in the world of animation. As editor-in-chief of the International Film Society’s quarterly publication Animafilm (from 1979–81), he helped to redefine the term animation, and he is now considering “the way animated film has proceeded since 1980 [in my] experience … as a film historian, critic, festival programmer, director and filmmaker.”
In July Giżycki will head to Poznań, Poland for Animator, the international animated film festival where he has served as artistic director since 2007. He just finished shooting a live-action period piece called Theatrum Magicum (see images, above) and is happy to report that his 2015 short film STO[NE]S (see clip, above) will be shown at the Melbourne International Animation Festival in June.
