Schools for Haiti

Architecture alumnus and faculty member Jack Ryan BArch 00 lost no time in figuring out how he could best help Haiti to rebuild after the devastating earthquake in January. As an architectural consultant for the NGO Plan International, he volunteered to design a prototype for a transitional school that is now being built throughout the country; by the end of this fall, Plan International expects to have completed 76 schools, accommodating more than 7,600 schoolchildren.
Ryan—who is also an architect at the Providence-based firm 3six0—reports that while the new schools are helping, “we are behind schedule due to severe tropical storms, sites that still need to be cleared, customs delays in importing construction components and administrative issues with land grants.”
In addition to his own work on the project, he credits Architecture Professor Wil Yoder 62 AR for assistance with structural engineering and Nick Croft MArch 2008 and Tim DeCoster MArch 2008 for help with computer renderings.
