New graduate Jacqueline Lung 16 JM has already begun to attract attention with these handmade stainless steel sunglasses. Designed as part of her senior degree project, they’re inspired by the nature of steel itself, as she recently told online design magazine Dezeen.

“Form and function certainly play big roles in my work,” the new resident of San Francisco notes, “but it always begins with the materials.” On her site, she also points out that “steel, concrete and duct tape are the building materials of our world.”

To make her Archytas eyewear (named after the ancient Greek philosopher believed to have invented the screw), Lung bends, welds and sands strips of stainless steel and then attaches the round, mirrored lenses with screws. She is currently producing limited runs of the high-end shades, which are available online.

Though Lung initially planned to major in Illustration at RISD, she quickly fell for metalsmithing. “The materials and the ingrained attention to detail are perfect for my obsessive personality,” she says.
